A tense standoff is ongoing between officials from the Lagos Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and military personnel over the attempted closure of the busy Adeniji to Falomo Road. The dispute began at midnight, with LASTMA personnel calling for backup from the task force.
According to sources, the Federal Controller of Works for Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Keisha, had requested military assistance to enforce the road closure for rehabilitation purposes. However, LASTMA officials insist that sufficient notice must be given to the public before any closure, as is customary.
"The Lagos Ministry of Transportation needs to be informed in advance so that we can make a formal announcement and inform the public," a LASTMA official said. "But the Federal Controller of Works is adamant about the closure and has engaged military personnel to enforce it."
The situation could have escalated into a physical confrontation if not for the restraint shown by the military personnel. Efforts to reach Mrs. Keisha were unsuccessful, as she did not respond to calls or messages.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Transport, Wale Musa, confirmed the incident and assured that the ministry is working to resolve the issue amicably. "The General Manager of LASTMA has informed me of the situation. The Honourable Commissioner, the Special Adviser, and I are working to resolve the matter."
