Nojim Maiyegun, a legendary Nigerian boxer and the country's first-ever Olympic medalist, has died at the age of 83.
His death was confirmed by a close friend, Rudolfine F Soultan, on Facebook.
Maiyegun passed away on Monday morning in Vienna, Austria, after battling an undisclosed illness for several months.
He made history at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, winning a bronze medal in the light-heavyweight boxing category at just 23 years old.
During his impressive Olympic run, Maiyegun defeated notable opponents, including William Robinson of Great Britain and Tom Bogs of Denmark.
He also won a bronze medal at the 1966 Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica.
Maiyegun later pursued a professional boxing career, leaving Nigeria in 1971. He fought 16 times, securing 12 wins, with 10 of them being knockouts.
His remarkable achievements and contributions to Nigerian sports will be deeply remembered and celebrated.
