A Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti has sentenced 17 individuals to one month of community service for violating Ekiti State’s Environmental Health and Sanitation Laws during the recent January sanitation exercise.

Magistrate Olubunmi Bamidele, who presided over the case, offered the offenders an alternative fine of N5,000. In her ruling, she highlighted the public health risks posed by neglecting sanitation guidelines and stressed the importance of adherence to environmental safety protocols.

Eleven other suspects were discharged after their cases were reviewed by the court.

Meanwhile, the Ekiti State Government has praised the high level of compliance recorded during the January sanitation exercise. Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Erelu Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe, made the commendation while monitoring the exercise in Ado-Ekiti.

She underscored that maintaining a clean and healthy environment is a shared responsibility and urged residents to sustain their efforts to ensure environmental hygiene.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Tunde Balogun, the Commissioner emphasized that enforcing sanitation laws is critical to preventing disease outbreaks caused by poor hygiene practices.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to a sustainable and hygienic environment, warning that violators of sanitation laws would face strict penalties to deter future breaches.

Aluko-Ajisafe also called on community leaders and stakeholders to increase awareness campaigns about the importance of sanitation and to encourage active participation during monthly sanitation periods.

She reiterated that the government would not relent in ensuring that offenders are held accountable to promote cleaner communities across the state.

Providing a detailed report on the exercise, the Director of Environmental Health and Sanitation, Mr. Ayodele Aluko, disclosed that 28 offenders were apprehended in various areas of the state capital for non-compliance.

He assured residents that the ministry remains vigilant and committed to its mission of fostering a healthier and cleaner environment through consistent enforcement of sanitation laws and community engagement.
