A political activist and former governorship candidate of the ADP from Ekiti State, Comrade Idowu Afuye, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to carefully manage aggrieved members within the All Progressives Congress (APC) to ensure the party’s stability and success in future elections, particularly the 2027 presidential race.
Afuye emphasized that key figures like former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, and former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi should not be sidelined.
He warned that ignoring their grievances could lead to the formation of a mega opposition party capable of challenging Tinubu’s re-election bid.
He acknowledged Tinubu’s good intentions for Nigeria, stating that his policies and programs are aimed at long-term national development.
However, he cautioned the president against overestimating his influence, noting that governance at the federal level requires broader coalition-building beyond the strategic maneuvers that helped him secure power in Lagos.
Furthermore, Afuye urged Tinubu to be mindful of opposition parties, particularly the People's Democratic Party (PDP), which still holds political weight in Nigeria.
He noted that if prominent figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and some PDP governors were to align with disgruntled APC members under an existing party, it could pose a significant electoral threat.
Addressing the current economic challenges, Afuye admitted that Tinubu's policies could benefit Nigeria in the long run but noted that the hardship they are causing has made life difficult for many Nigerians.
He stressed that while other developed nations have gone through similar economic struggles, Nigerians are impatient for immediate relief.
He also advised Tinubu to consider the northern political factor carefully, cautioning against engaging in simultaneous battles with political elites ("the cabal") and the general populace.
According to him, while Tinubu’s efforts to dismantle entrenched power structures may be for the country's benefit, they should not come at the cost of widespread dissatisfaction among the masses.
Afuye concluded by urging Tinubu to prioritize unity within APC and ensure that party members feel valued and included, as this would be crucial for the party’s survival and success in future elections.
