Ondo State Governor Approves Upgrade of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic to University of Agriculture
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has given the green light for the transformation of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, into a University of Agriculture and Agribusiness.
The announcement was made in a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, who explained that the decision followed a review of the institution’s initial upgrade proposal.
Under the previous administration, plans were in place to convert the polytechnic into a University of Management Science and Technology.
However, upon assuming office, Governor Aiyedatiwa opted to reposition the institution as a center for agricultural innovation and food security.
According to the statement, the governor emphasized that the newly upgraded university would serve as a model for the state’s agricultural and food security initiatives.
To facilitate the transition, a committee will be established to oversee the implementation process.
The governor assured students and staff that the conversion would not disrupt their academic or professional activities.
In addition to this development, Governor Aiyedatiwa has approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the state government and a private investor to inject N15 billion into a youth-focused agricultural initiative.
The initiative, known as the Young Ranchers Agricultural Cluster Development Programme, will be executed in collaboration with AgroMall Discovery and Extension Limited.
Under this program, three clusters of five hectares each will be developed in the state, with Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (now the University of Agriculture and Agribusiness) and two other higher institutions serving as pilot beneficiaries.
The initiative aims to provide practical agricultural training for students while also offering financial benefits to the participating institutions.
Furthermore, the governor has endorsed another MoU with BBA Consult to implement a secure ICT system designed to improve state resource planning and enhance internally generated revenue.
This project will operate under a Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) arrangement.
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s decisions reflect his administration’s commitment to advancing education, youth empowerment, and economic development in Ondo State.
