Obasa Re-Elected as Lagos Speaker Following Meranda’s Resignation
The Lagos State House of Assembly has re-elected Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda. Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency I, was reinstated on Monday, seven weeks after being removed from the position.
His return was facilitated by a nomination from Noheem Adams, a former Majority Leader representing Eti-Osa Constituency I. After taking the oath of office, Obasa officially resumed leadership of the House.
Background of the Leadership Crisis
Obasa, first elected as a lawmaker in 2007, had served as Speaker since June 2015 until his impeachment on January 13, 2025. His removal came after more than two-thirds of the 40-member House voted him out, citing alleged misconduct. Mojisola Meranda, his then-deputy, was immediately appointed as Speaker, making history as the first female to lead the Assembly.
Following his impeachment, Obasa contested the decision, arguing that due process was not followed and that the Assembly complex was militarized during the process. He claimed his removal was conducted in his absence while he was out of the country.
Despite this, 36 lawmakers remained loyal to Meranda, insisting that she was the legitimate Speaker. Tensions escalated on February 17, 2025, when security agents clashed with legislative staff at the Assembly Complex. Meranda’s supporters reaffirmed their confidence in her leadership, adjourning the House indefinitely.
However, Obasa made a dramatic return to the Assembly on February 27, accompanied by armed security personnel. He insisted he was still the rightful Speaker, despite resistance from his colleagues.
Meranda eventually stepped down from her position, paving the way for Obasa’s re-election. Her resignation and subsequent re-election as Deputy Speaker mark another turn in the prolonged leadership struggle within the Lagos Assembly.
