Ekiti State Commissioner for Youth Development, Honourable Gold Adesola Adedayo, has thrown his full weight behind the “Football for a Plastic-Free Ekiti” initiative, a youth-focused environmental campaign spearheaded by The Triple Green Environment Development (TGED) Foundation in partnership with the Ado and Ikere Local Football Councils (LFCs).

The Commissioner declared his support during a courtesy visit by the campaign’s delegation to his office at the State Secretariat Complex in Ado-Ekiti. The visit was aimed at introducing the initiative ahead of World Environment Day 2025. The campaign seeks to harness the unifying power of football to raise awareness about plastic pollution and instill sustainable habits among young people across the state.

Honourable Adedayo described the initiative as a “brilliant and much-needed intervention” that merges youth empowerment with environmental advocacy. He assured the delegation of his personal attendance at the World Environment Day event and committed the Ministry’s support in mobilizing young people. He also pledged to partner with the TGED Foundation on similar youth-oriented environmental projects in the future.

Commending both the foundation and the LFCs, Adedayo noted that the initiative aligns perfectly with the state’s dual goals of youth development and environmental sustainability. He lauded their proactive approach to tackling ecological challenges while engaging the youth meaningfully.

Founder of the TGED Foundation, Ms. Oluwaseyi Ebenezer, led the visiting team and outlined the campaign’s goals, stressing its potential to inspire environmental responsibility through football. She said the initiative aims to leverage the sport’s wide appeal to drive community awareness and reduce plastic waste in Ekiti.

Supporting her remarks, Mr. Tosin Popoola, Ado LFC Media Affiliate, emphasized football’s ability to rally the youth and foster a collective sense of responsibility towards the environment. Mr. Popoola was joined by other key members of the delegation, including Prince Deji Aladesiun (Chairman, Ado LFC), Raji Adewale (Chairman, Ikere LFC), and Adeyanju Olalekan, TGED’s Program Officer.
