SWAN Ekiti Hails Governor Oyebanji, Senator Bamidele on National Sports Awards, Rates Governor High on Sports Development

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ekiti State Chapter, has extended heartfelt congratulations to Governor Biodun Oyebanji and Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele on their recent recognition at the National Sports Awards, describing the honours as well-deserved tributes to their unwavering commitment to sports and youth development in Ekiti State and beyond.

This commendation was made during the association’s October general meeting held at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium in Ado Ekiti, which coincided with the third anniversary of Governor Oyebanji’s administration. The association, comprising leading sports journalists in the state, took time to assess the progress of sports under the present government and rated the governor highly for his vision, investment, and passion for sporting excellence.

Speaking on behalf of the association, the Chairman and member of the Ekiti Sports Development Trust Fund, Qozeem Oladapo, lauded the governor for implementing transformative projects that have repositioned Ekiti on the national sports map. Among these are the comprehensive refurbishment of the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, construction of an ultra-modern indoor sports hall, establishment of a new sports hostel, and consistent support for athletes and sports administrators across various disciplines.

SWAN noted that Governor Oyebanji’s inclusive sports policies have not only boosted the morale of sportsmen and women but have also created new opportunities for youth engagement, empowerment, and talent discovery. The association rated him 80 percent in terms of performance in the sports sector, stating that his administration’s interventions have laid a strong foundation for sustained growth and competitiveness. It further revealed plans to submit an official communiqué to the governor, highlighting the association’s assessment of the current state of sports in Ekiti and identifying areas that still require attention.

While commending the governor’s efforts, SWAN also appealed to the state government to extend its empowerment programmes to members of the Sports Writers Association, who have remained steadfast in promoting grassroots sports and projecting the achievements of the government through consistent reportage. The association urged the government to provide office accommodation and a media gallery within the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, similar to what obtains in other states, to enable members perform their duties more effectively.

The association concluded that the recognitions accorded Governor Oyebanji and Senator Bamidele at the National Sports Awards stand as a testament to Ekiti’s growing prominence in Nigeria’s sports development narrative, assuring that SWAN will continue to partner with the government in advancing the cause of sports and youth empowerment in the state.
