NYC Emure Hosts Grand Finale of Anti-Drug, Anti-Violence Campaign, Empowers 46 Youths
Emure Ekiti came alive with excitement and a renewed sense of purpose as the Nigerian Youth Congress (NYC), Emure Local Government Chapter, held the grand finale of its campaign against drug abuse and political violence, combined with its Skill-Up Acquisition Programme.
The colourful event drew community leaders, youths, and stakeholders who gathered to witness the impact of the initiative on young people in the area.
The programme was sponsored by Dr Mrs Olusola Osetoba, the Technical Advisor on Sports Development to Governor Biodun Oyebanji, whose support played a pivotal role in the success of the project. Her sponsorship underscored the importance of collaborative efforts between government representatives and grassroots organisations in tackling pressing social issues affecting young people.
The initiative was conceived by the Nigerian Youth Congress, Emure Chapter, under the leadership of Comrade Oluwafemi Babalola, as part of efforts to address rising concerns about substance abuse and politically motivated violence among youths.
Beyond advocacy, the organisers adopted a practical approach by equipping participants with vocational skills that can provide legitimate sources of income and reduce vulnerability to social vices.
A total of 46 participants benefited from hands-on training in soap making, barbing, and confectionery production. The training sessions were structured to ensure that beneficiaries gained not only theoretical knowledge but also practical experience that would enable them to start small-scale businesses of their own.
In her address at the event, Dr Osetoba charged the beneficiaries to make meaningful use of the opportunity they had received. She urged them to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to building sustainable livelihoods, stressing that the skills acquired should serve as stepping stones to financial independence and personal growth. She further assured the community of her readiness to leverage her office to attract more developmental initiatives to Emure.
As part of the empowerment segment of the programme, all 46 participants were presented with certificates in recognition of their successful completion of the training. Two outstanding beneficiaries were empowered with starter packs in soap making and confectionery production, while eight trained barbers received brand new clippers to support their trade. The remaining 34 participants were given financial tokens as encouragement to begin their entrepreneurial journeys.
The event was graced by respected community leaders, including Chief Agbaakin and Chief Olomofe, who commended the organisers and sponsor for their commitment to youth development. They advised the beneficiaries to show appreciation by making productive use of the training and materials received, noting that empowerment opportunities such as this are rare and should not be taken for granted.
The Honourable member representing Emure youths at the 4th assembly of the Ekiti Youth Parliament Comrade Mayowa Adedayo was also at the event.
It would be recalled that the current executives of the Nigerian Youth Congress, Emure Local Government Chapter, were elected on January 9 and have since been mandated by the state arm to positively influence the lives of youths in the community. The successful hosting of the grand finale stands as a testament to their resolve to deliver on that mandate and to foster a safer, more economically empowered generation in Emure Ekiti.
