The Ekiti State para-athletes contingent has returned home after an impressive outing at the 2026 National Para Games held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, where they recorded historic achievements.

The games, which ran from March 26 to April 3, 2026, saw Ekiti athletes compete in six sporting events, securing medals across multiple categories and setting new milestones for the state. Notably, the contingent made history in wheelchair basketball, para soccer, and para swimming—events in which Ekiti participated for the first time and still emerged with medals.

In individual performances, Taiwo Olasunkanmi clinched gold in para karate, while Araomo Oladapo Stephen secured silver in the same event. The wheelchair basketball team also delivered a strong performance, earning a silver medal. Ajimati Modupe won bronze in para powerlifting, while Olaniyi Joshua claimed bronze in shot put. Ofere Modupe added another bronze in the women’s javelin, and Ajayi David secured bronze medals in both the men’s javelin and discus events.

Overall, Team Ekiti finished with one gold, two silver, and five bronze medals, earning a respectable place on the national medal table.

Welcoming the team back at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, the Technical Advisor to the Governor on Sports Development, Dr. Olusola Osetoba, expressed gratitude for their safe return and commended their performance. She also praised Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji for his continued support and commitment to sports development in the state.

Dr. Osetoba congratulated the athletes, coaches, and officials, urging them to remain focused and intensify preparations for upcoming competitions in 2026.

Speaking on behalf of the team, Head Coach Ojo Peter and team captain Segun Durotawo expressed appreciation to the state government, particularly Governor Oyebanji and Dr. Osetoba, as well as the sports commission officials, for their unwavering support before, during, and after the games. They reaffirmed the team’s commitment to achieving even greater success in future competitions.
